Narrow Gauge Show Report
This past April 15-17 approximately 140 individuals from the US, Canada
and Great Britain attended the annual Midwest Narrow Gauge show in
Greenford, Ohio.
Several new dealers were selling their wares at this year’s show, and
Warrior Run returned with their large scale layout. The gym was packed
and they plan to add more rooms for next year’s show.
There were not as many operating layouts and displays as in previous
years. Next year there will be more rooms available for operating
layouts, which will also help with the overcrowding in the gym.
The model contest was excellent with some very nice entries from
individuals who had not entered models in previous year’s contests.
The show was kick-started Thursday evening with a slide presentation by
Jim Weinschenker on his favorite railroad: the Waynesburg &
Washington and over 25 individuals attended.
Friday was a mad house, and over 100 individuals had checked in by 1:00
P.M. - a show record. By then most layouts were up and running and the
first clinic was well under way. Clinics continued until 4:30, at which
time the facility was vacated to allow everyone to get something to eat
and relax a bit before the Friday evening programs began.
Unfortunately, Bob Richardson was not able to attend due to an illness.
Bob was the featured speaker on Friday nights; however, Lee Rainey did a
wonderful job and provided a nice presentation on the EBT.
Saturday is the busiest day with clinic rooms filled and dealers doing a
reasonable business, plus layout operators entertaining onlookers.
The show wrapped up with a buffet at Timberlanes Inn; and if nothing
else, everyone left fed!
On Sunday, there were five layouts open including four in Cleveland and
one in Columbus. Although not really close to the show, it does allow
for those traveling through those areas a chance to stop and visit.
Next year there will be a Sunday tour of the Youngstown & Southern
Railroad. The southern end of the railroad is extremely interesting with
many sharp curves and cuts. Many of the old industries still stand along
the operating line, even the old engine facilities still stand, although
the water tower was taken down several years ago.
