Denver
South Park and Southern Railroad
by John Chlebowski
The DSP&S
is a combination of The D&RGW, DSP&P, C&S,
and RGS. Time frame is mostly the late 1939-40 era.
Layout
construction is modular in format with no section longer than seven feet.
This can and has been cut apart to be moved and is now in its third new
home. It has grown with each move and is now 26 feet by 19 feet. Zero
level is at 50 inches with it climbing to 57 inches. The base is 1/2 inch
plywood under 1/2 inch homosote with the scenery made mostly of Styrofoam
with the newer sections made of plaster cloth. All trackwork is flex track
from Shinahora and Tomalco. Switches are Darr, Simpson, Railway
Engineering and B&K Enterprises. Power is provided with a choice of
sound systems, the PBL or the PFM. It can be switched from
one to the other if you need to compare. The motive power is steam or
gasoline types. From the C’s & K’s to the Galloping Geese.

Mine Scene
Let’s take a journey.
The train is made up in the yard with the loading of water, sand and coal.
The Yard resembles Durango. A new 6-stall Sargent roundhouse
is under construction to replace the old three-stall engine house. The
turntable will still feed the yard, engine facility and car shop. We leave
the yard through the West End of the wye up through Forks Creek.
Westward bound, we come to Sargent for passengers, freight,
sand, and water and refueled at the fully scaled coaling trestle. All
aboard, we are now heading north through Red Mountain, with
the National Belle Mine overseeing the summit, passing over the steel
bridge upgrade to the curved trestle into the Ophir Loop
Area, stopping at the station to transfer passengers and freight. Sure is
a lot of noise coming from the Gilton Club saloon at the top of the
hill!!! Departing Ophir we are downgrade over the long
trestle and through Red Mountain before making the climb
toward the mining district of the C&S. Observe the Grand
Central Gold Mine, The Glory Mine and The Hutkill Mine. We are downgrade
over the tall trestle toward the No Name stamp mill, than over the curved
trestle toward the Gramps Oil Dock. After dropping any tank cars we are
now on the way through Jefferson for a station stop and
water before returning by way of the East leg of the wye at Forks
Creek. We have now returned to the yards awaiting another trip.
Thank you for coming with us for a ride through Narrow Gauge Country.
This is Colorado in miniature as we can remember it. You can see the Aspen
and smell the tall pines. Look for future additions in the stamp mill loop
area.
