RAILINGS from the KING SNIPE

Bill Logan       wrlogan@msn.com

2003 Midwest Narrow Gauge Wrap-up
This years’ Midwest Narrow Gauge meet in April was another success. Mini-Bunch member attendance increased from 2002. Great clinics - twelve in all - were presented both days – many by Mini-Bunch members. A wide diversity of models and scales were represented in the model room and vendors once again filled the gymnasium. We look forward to next years meet.

Three Mini-Bunch members in the Cleveland area  - John Chlebowski, Nat Howard, and John Hansen – opened their railroads for viewing. Great work fellows! For those who managed, presented clinics, displayed and sold modeling supplies and literature, opened their railroads, as well as attended – my kudos.

Outdoor railroading comes close to real railroading – sometimes more than I would hope for.  The debris from winter and spring seed fall has been removed and the mainline re-ballasted along with the minor adjustments in grade necessary from the winter’s frost heave. Rails have been checked for alignment and cleaning. My structures remain outside all year long so just like your house some buildings get a new coat of paint. This year represents 12 years for the railroad and just like the original OR&W some wood bridges and trestles need more than minor repair. My 3 percent ruling grade keeps train length limited to four cars per mogul and will remain so – grade re-alignment remains difficult. New equipment needs negotiation with management. Used equipment is easier to budget. Just like the original.

Next Meeting - Columbus, Ohio
The fall meet
is scheduled for Columbus, Ohio on October 4 and 5.  Jim Ruisinger and Doc and Butch Sage have been hard at work with the arrangements. Sunday should see quite a few railroads opened for viewing. Information and maps will be included in a newsletter in August.

Remember that a new King Snipe will be elected at the meeting

Discussion at Spring Meeting

Jim Ruisinger and Doc and Butch Sage will be co-ordinating the fall meet in Columbus. Jim is also gathering information on the cost of having shirts and other garb embroidered with the Mini-Bunch logo. He will have information at the Fall meet.

Although many members will probably return to the Greenford meet next April, the group also voted to organize a separate spring meet. Possibly this will be at Cass, WV.

The layout tour on Sunday after the meeting was a moderate success.  John, Nat and John each had between 15 and 22 people visiting their layouts. Bruce Bowie took photos of their layouts. He has posted them on his photo site:

http://photos.yahoo.com/in2trains@sbcglobal.net The photos are in separate folders for each of the railroads.

Fall Mini-Bunch Meeting October 4 and 5, 2003

Jim Ruisinger sent in the following information:
Just a quick update on plans for the fall Mini-Bunch Meet.   Our original choice for a location turned us down because we would be in there past 6 p.m.

However,  I have secured a new location that will suit our purpose very nicely.  In fact, a bit nicer than our original choice.  The new location is Lane Avenue Baptist Church.  It's located, you guessed it, on Lane Avenue right across from the Lane Avenue Shopping Center.  It is easily accessible from the east via SR 315 and from the west via US 33/Fishinger Rd, which is a stone's throw from I-270 on the west side of town.  We will have one large room for our clinics and evening program.  There will be two partitioned-off rooms for displays and vendors and two classrooms for contests.  Additionally, we CAN stage our cook-out as we had originally planned.  We also have use of a smaller room off their kitchen for coffee, donuts and our evening meal as well as limited use of their kitchen facilities.  We can gain access at 9 a.m. and should be wrapped up by 9 p.m. or shortly there after.

Now the little downside....  the cost is $200.  Primarily due to the fact that their cleaning crew normally is in there on Saturday afternoons and they would have to pay them extra to come in long after hours to clean up.  It's been hinted that a portion of this (maybe $50) might be kicked back to us if we don't turn the place into a shambles and do things like put away/ stack up chairs and tables and stuff and generally clean up after ourselves.  There are also some additional things like no smoking or alcohol in the building.

Doc Sage is working on our clinic program and Butch Sage putting together a meal plan with associated costs.  Once that is done, we can get the info out to everyone. The dates remain unchanged. October 4 and 5.

From the Editor
My wife and I just returned from a trip to England and Scotland. We rode one narrow gauge rail line - the 2 foot gauge Ffestiniog Railway. What an experience! And we happened to buy first class tickets, and the other occupants of the car were just three old-time railway volunteers. A great learning experience because we heard stories of the lines reconstruction and about the locomotives and rolling stock on the line.

An interesting sidelight: I guess railroading - model and full-size - has a greater level of obsession over there. I was in a regular supermarket and the magazine rack had 16! different magazines devoted to model and full-size trains. (Only MR was from the US)

Fritz Prosch is gathering a complete set of the Mini-Bunch newsletters for a historical file. His files do not include all of the newsletters for the past five years. Can you help him complete the file?  Maybe you can bring any that you have to the fall meet.

In reviewing Dale Brown’s files about two months ago, I came across an interesting document. It turns out that we are a ‘legal’ organization and that we have bylaws! (Comment was made at the spring meeting that we have “no rules.”) Not True!!!  We  filed with the Secretary of State of Ohio in early 1980’s. Presumably this was done in conjunction with the 1985 National Narrow Gauge meet that was held in Columbus. By the way, the bylaws state that our leader is to be elected at the spring meeting in odd numbered years.

My railroad is progressing. Due to the pressure of a NMRA Div 5 layout tour in May, there is some scenery to help keep the trains off the floor. Two photos are on the cover of the newsletter. More photos showing construction progress on the layout can be seen on a photo site: http://photos.yahoo.com/ngtrains455 and select the San Juan Southern folder.

The open house was really a disaster from the stand-point of railroad operation. The day started with three operating locomotives. After four hours operation, there were none functioning. Now, why does a loco-motive develop a short circuit while operating? It rained all day, and about three hours into the open house, the lights flickered a bit. Power never went completely off, but DCC must be more sensitive. My last locomotive kept getting slower and slower. Even after taking off all the cars, it kept slowing down.

Is there a way to make a railroad run as well at an open house as it does when there are no visitors?

Changing Position of the Third Rail is a commentary by Bob Richardson about the 3rd rail on Sheffield wye.

From Around the Narrow Gauge World

The Colorado Railroad Museum reports that C-19 #346 will be shipped to the Strasburg shops in PA to rebuild the boiler and work on the running gear. Cost is about $185,000 plus shipping costs.

The Cumbres and Toltec line is operating four days per week. The full line is run - Chama to Antonito and then back the next day. Buses are used to ferry passengers back to their starting point. Only 487 is currently operating.

They are sponsoring Chama Steam II in late October. This will include freight and passenger trains, photo opportunities, etc. Cost is $500 and limited to 65 participants.

Not narrow gauge, but the Ohio Central running from Sugar Creek has discontinued passenger runs.

Name Badges available

Some members have never received a name badge since they were not available for a number of years. Others have lost theirs. Jim Eakin has a vendor who can make badges. So send $10 to Ted, and we will have a new badge for you by the next meeting. (Tell us how to spell the name too - nickname - or whatever.)

Mini-Bunch Newsletter on Internet

Thanks to David Keith, our webmaster, we have the chance to see the photos in color. We will send each newsletter to David for posting. Generally, there will be additional photos that we do not have room for in the newsletter.

If you send your email address to Ted, it will be added to the address book, and you will be notified when the newsletter is available on the Internet.

Notes from the Editors

John and Ted thank Jim Eakin for the help in getting these newsletters printed. Jim has been in the railroad printing business for a number of years. So we get better copying for a really reasonable price.

HELP NEEDED!!!!

We plan to send out 4 newsletters per year. We are looking for articles on modelbuilding and prototype that will be of interest for the members. John and I have a special interest in Western narrow gauge. Would anyone like to try their hand at preparing a column on logging or Eastern narrow gauge?

LAST COPY                ?????

If your label has “last copy” written on it, then we would appreciate your sending $8.00 to Ted for the next 2 years. Your subscription lasts for 8 issues following your payment of $8 or following your registering at a meeting.

Please note that you must register at each meeting to be marked ‘present.’ Registration includes payment of the registration fee which will be set for each meeting.
