Happenings on the Sn2
SR&RL (Click on data to see progress report) |
| 04/17/05 |
April 8-9, the Kingfield Station Sn2 Free-Mo
section went North to the Midwest
Narrow Gauge Meet to be part of the first
Sn2 Free-Mo setup. Click here
to read about the event. |

The work group has returned to the SR&RL.
Our most significant project is adding turnout
controls to the layout. We are adapting a unique
solution, see the latest developments by clicking
here. |

Progress continues on the Sn2 Free-Mo
sections. The framework for the Kingfield section is nearly
complete. Click here to
see how it went together. |

It's been almost a year since posting an update
to the diary. For much of that time, not much
occurred. Some of that was burnout, some of that was
preparing for the arrival of my first child who came in
October. Now, that I'm adjusting to life as dad, I'm focused
again on building the layout to have it ready for the 2005
National NMRA convention. The layout is to be part of 4
layout tours and two operating sessions (At this time, I can not
tell you which tours, as it is all very hush-hush...).
Anyway, my dad has been helping me to build the Rangeley staging
yard, and two Sn2 Free-Mo
modules. Click here to see
all of the progress. I've also posted a larger track
plan. I still need a better rendition. |

After all of this work, a week off was
deserved. Actually, the work crew is headed to start on Paul
Miklos' N-scale B&O Ohio Division layout, who knows when we
will return to the Sn2 SR&RL. In the mean time, I
continue to work on the layout. First of all, I hooked up
the Atlas DCC system including Hand Command as well as a Lenz XPA
with Radio Shack cordless phone for radio control. Click
here to read about my comments on the XPA and rest of DCC system. |

NMRA Division comes to visit. Was I
ready? The duckunder was completed, 30' of roadbed and track
completed the continuous run. Most of it hand laid.
That Sunday morning, Jim and I cleaned up the basement, see what
the layout looked like for the
NMRA members! |
| 2/02/04 |
Phil, Don, and Paul get the duckunder
started. Jim cuts more foam for Kingfield and beyond.
Tom and I do more valance work, but do not have all the materials
required. To see process and evaluate the height of my
duckunder click here. Less
than 7 days remain till the NMRA open house. |

End plates built for Phillips, Strong and Dickey
Bridge Sections. All sections now lock into place. Click
here to see this progress and more. |
| 1/19/04 |
Not much happened this weeks session. Jim
cut out foam for Kingfield and Tom worked on the valances.
During the week, I cut built an end plate for the back of Strong,
then fit and installed foam for Starbirds. No photos for
this week's work. |
| 1/12/04 |
Layout painting session. Layout now looks
cleaner, as the benchwork is painted. Also added a cote of
primer to the backdrop. |
| 1/05/04 |
6 more sections of backdrop installed. The
backdrop is nearly complete (structurally). A few other
tasks got completed too, click here
to follow along. |
| 12/29/03 |
4 8' sections of styrene backdrop go up.
64' of backdrop is up in the form of 48' + 16'. Another 48'
remains to be installed. Click
here to see the latest progress. |
| 12/22/03 |
The layout gets an anchor! It is anchored to the
house column. No longer will I worry about the layout
moving. Additionally, the final door (backdrop support) goes
up, with proper bracing for the top. Click
here to see what has been happening. |
| 12/15/03 |
Not much progress on the weekend. A smaller
crew gets the second door up, and another door spliced. The
second door had to be cut for access and tracks. Click
here to see the second door section. |
| 12/08/03 |
On Paul's suggestion, doors are the heart of the
double sided backdrop. They are to provide solid support for
the linear portions of the layout. The first door goes up,
and the other are cut and spliced. Click
here to see the first door up. Boy does it divide the
room. Bigelow will be isolate from the rest of the layout. |
| 12/01/03 |
Over the weekend, I completed the design of the
Kingfield yard and hidden tracks below. However, the work
session became design session, as we tried to figure out how the
backdrop was to be supported on the peninsula. Click
here to view Kingfield planning |
| 11/24/03 |
Over the weekend, I planned out worked on full
sized plans for the F&M branch and finalized the track layout
for Bigelow. The goal of the planning was to
locate the joists. During
the work session, most of the joists were placed on the peninsula, the
junction at Strong got benchwork, and more work was done on
backdrop joints. Click here
to see more progress. |
| 11/17/03 |
Don Rigling and I met on Thursday to correct the errors made on
Monday. Most of the peninsula benchwork was put up. The rest
of the group joined us on Monday to nearly complete the
"L" girder installation. Additionally another
piece of styrene backdrop went up. Click
here to see more progress. |
| 11/10/03 |
The groups attempts
to assemble the benchwork. What a failure. We got it
all wrong (not level). No photos. |
| 11/03/03 |
The "New" layout comes down! Not
satisfied with the "New" plan a "New2" plan
was created. This plan has many pluses, but takes up more
room. This is the
first week of work sessions which will run through January or
February 04 (before the group shifts to another layout -
round robin). Click here to see new new plan and progress |
| 04/27/03 |
After a 3.5 week effort Jim Stewart and I got the
layout up and running for the NMRA Regional Convention here in
Cincinnati. All that effort was seen by 3 NMRA members, 3
family member, 3 Eastern Loggers and 3 neighbors. Click here
to see the track plan and a few photos. |
| 04/05/03 |
The SR&RL appeared at the Ohio 2-Foot
Meet. This was the 4th time that parts of the layout
appeared at the Ohio 2-Foot meet. Many thanks to Jim Stewart
for again helping me cart the layout to a model railroad
event. No Photos for this event. |
| 02/15/03 |
The SR&RL traveled to the 2003 Sn3 Symposium
in St. Louis. Jim Stewart helped me get the layout to St.
Louis. Before hand Jim and I spent many hard hours creating
birch trees and detailing the scenery near the Salmon Hole
Bridge. Click here to see a few photos. |
