Sandy River and Rangeley Lakes RR

circa 1912

Track Plan

In 2002, I moved to a new home and in 2003 I started building a new layout (reusing many of the sections from the original layout see below).  The new layout was started in March, then torn down in November, then I started building to the new/new plan.  See more about the construction of this version on the diary page.  This plan is a bit rough.  Rangeley is not built as draw, it will be a 5 track staging yard with a turntable at the end.  Readington is now about 16" wide and it gets wider at the end of the isle for the mill.  Farmington as planned was to be another staging yard, but now I plan to have a very squashed version in the same space shown.  It will have 3 tracks for interchange and a track for the canopy.  Starbirds has been simplified, but much of the rest is the same.

This is the final track plan chosen for the Sn2 SR&RL layout.  Sorry to say, the plan lack scenic details.  Hopefully, the concept diagram below will be sufficient.  Clicking on the plan will bring up a larger version.  While hard to read, the concept plan below shows more details.

The layout space is 23' long, 9 feet wide at Phillips, and 12 feet wide at Farmington.  The plan shows the outlines of the proposed sections.  As of 12/01, the Strong turntable section, and all sections to the right (on the plan) have been constructed.  Most likely I will move before the Farmington sections can be built.

Above is the original concept sketch for the layout.  Actually all sections were built using this concept.  The 3rd PlanIt diagram top was made after construction was initiated.  I'm sorry that the two plans do not have the same orientation, but I hope you can compare the two plans.  The biggest difference between the two is the design of the Farmington sections.  In the original concept, Farmington was to be an island.  The Island was dropped in the final plan because it would have taken up more room space than I wanted.  Basically, the plan was too congested with the island.

The concept sketch does show the locations of rivers, bridges, and many structures.  The locations would be the same on the final plan.  The only structure that is on the concept sketch, that will not be on the layout is the creamery in Strong.  The reason being that the creamery did not exist in 1912.  The Phillips roundhouse had 10 stalls in 1912, yet my final layout only has space for the original 5 stalls.
